Abia Demolishes Kidnappers’ Hideout, Warns Landlords on Tenant Screening
The Abia State Government has demolished a building in Osisioma Local Government Area that was being used as a hideout by kidnappers, warning landlords against renting their properties without proper background checks.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, addressing journalists in Umuahia on Tuesday, criticized landlords who prioritize rent collection over verifying the identities and activities of their tenants. He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough due diligence and maintaining proper tenant records to prevent properties from being used for criminal activities.
“The state government will not hesitate to demolish any house used for kidnapping,” Kanu warned, urging residents to remain vigilant, monitor their surroundings, and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The crackdown comes after a recent police operation that led to the neutralization of six suspected kidnappers, the rescue of four victims, and the recovery of weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition.
Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for criminal hideouts and ordered the complete demolition of the Osokwa building, vowing to prosecute its owner.
“Any landlord who allows criminals to use their property is as guilty as the criminals themselves,” Otti stated. He also directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to collaborate with the traditional ruler of the area to enhance community vigilance against suspicious individuals.
