Rwanda has announced its plan to reopen the Gatuna-Katuna land border with Uganda next week after a three-year closure.

The move followed a visit to Kigali by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s powerful son Muhoozi Kainerugaba last weekend when he and Rwandan President Paul Kagame pledged to restore relations. The tension between both countries had risen as a result of Rwanda repeatedly accusing Uganda of supporting rebel groups planning to topple the government in Kigali while Kampala accused Rwanda of carrying out illegal espionage activities in Uganda.

Rwanda’s foreign ministry said the country would re-open the common border on Jan. 31.

“Rwanda has taken note that there is a process to solve issues raised by Rwanda, as well as commitments made by the government of Uganda to address remaining obstacles,” it said in the statement.
