Rivers Assembly Backs Tinubu’s State of Emergency Declaration
The suspended Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the assembly itself.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule justified the President’s decision, citing Fubara’s refusal to implement the Supreme Court judgment and his alleged disregard for constitutional governance.
“The current state of Rivers is the direct result of the governor’s actions. He has continuously disobeyed court rulings, obstructed the functioning of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and failed to govern in line with his oath of office and the Constitution,” the statement read.
Amaewhule further stated that while the assembly had not anticipated such a declaration, it would comply with Tinubu’s decision and support the newly appointed Sole Administrator.
“As an Assembly, we assure our constituents that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we initially sought. The President has acted in the best interest of the nation. We urge all residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator assumes duty,” he added.
The suspended lawmakers pledged their cooperation, promising to provide any necessary legislative support to the Sole Administrator in Rivers State’s interest.
