Finance Minister Hails Tax Appeal Tribunal for Promoting Fairness and Efficiency
The Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, has applauded the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) for its role in fostering fairness, transparency, and efficiency in resolving tax disputes across Nigeria.
Uzoka-Anite gave the commendation during the send-off dinner organized in Abuja for the TAT chairmen and commissioners who served between 2018 and 2024. Commending their commitment to upholding the integrity of the tax system, which has thus increased taxpayers’ confidence to comply voluntarily.
Today, we celebrate your invaluable contributions and reflect on the significant impact your dedication has had on the evolution of our nation’s tax administration and dispute resolution framework, said the minister.
The TAT Coordinating Secretary, Irene Erinne, also praised the outgoing officials for solidifying the tribunals’ foundation and guaranteeing justice with a culture of transparency and efficiency. She noted that out of the 901 cases decided during their time, only three were overturned, and no single allegation of bribery was recorded-a first in the history of the tribunal.
Chukwuemeka Eze, who was also chairman of the South East Zone of the TAT and head of the Commissioners’ Forum, discussed the successes recorded by the tribunal in recovering millions of dollars for the federal government through the resolution of tax disputes between 2016 and 2018. He also mentioned critical milestones attained in developing the 2021 Tax Appeal Tribunal Procedure Rules and the publication of the Tax Appeal Tribunal Law Report.
A lot of money was recovered during our tenure, both in local and foreign currencies, adding to the financial health of Nigeria,” he said.
The event celebrated the achievements of the outgoing officials while emphasizing their critical contributions to enhancing the nation’s tax administration and dispute resolution systems.
