Abuja Truck Explosion Death Toll Rises to Eight

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has confirmed that the death toll from the truck explosion near Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway has risen to eight.

Acting Director General of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed, provided the update on Thursday while addressing journalists at the scene of the incident.

Initially, the FCT Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, had reported six fatalities and 14 burnt vehicles. However, Mohammed clarified that of the six victims, four were burnt beyond recognition, while two more succumbed to their injuries on Thursday morning, increasing the total number of deaths to eight.

“Five bodies were recovered at the scene yesterday, and one injured victim passed away later, bringing the count to six. This morning, two more victims were confirmed dead, raising the toll to eight. Four of them were burnt beyond recognition,” he stated.

Additionally, 30 individuals are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals across the FCT. According to Mohammed, eight victims are at Karu General Hospital, 10 at the Customs Hospital, 11 at the National Hospital, and one at the Aso Clinic.

He further directed officials to check Asokoro Hospital for any additional victims, emphasizing that the situation remains under close monitoring.
