Bauchi Governor Calls for Transparency in Oil Subsidy Distribution, Urges FG to Boost Resource Management

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has urged the Federal Government to clarify why Nigerians are no longer directly benefiting from the nation’s oil and gas subsidies as they once did. He made the call on Monday during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, ahead of the 2024 Conference for the National Council on Finance and Economic Development, hosted by Bauchi State.

Governor Mohammed emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in the management and distribution of Nigeria’s resources. He pointed out that since the inception of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigerians have not fully benefited from the country’s oil and gas wealth.

“It is a miracle that we are one of the biggest oil-producing nations, yet we have not benefited for some time. The Federal Government must explain the challenges they are facing to ensure inclusion. Leadership demands responsibility,” he said.

Mohammed also called for increased efforts in oil production and equitable resource distribution to states. “You must make the oil and gas sector productive—not only to produce and sell but to ensure revenues are deposited in the Treasury for fair distribution. Financial services must be provided to subnational governments to enhance productivity and ensure proper utilization of resources,” he added.

While expressing loyalty to the Federal Government, the governor reiterated the importance of transparency and equal treatment for all states.

Responding, Minister Wale Edun explained that his visit was part of preparations for the upcoming finance and economic development conference. He commended Bauchi State for hosting the event, noting that it would foster dialogue and build trust among stakeholders.

“The conference provides a platform for critical conversations to clarify issues, enhance understanding, and build trust. By understanding the financial and economic needs and potentials at various levels, we can collectively fulfill the country’s potential,” Edun stated.

The 2024 Conference for the National Council on Finance and Economic Development is expected to facilitate discussions on improving resource management and fostering collaboration between federal and subnational governments.
