Catholic Priest Abducted by Gunmen in Imo State, Church Calls for Prayers

Isiala Mbano, Imo State – November 6, 2024:

The parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday evening in the Ayayi community of Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State. Fr. Azubuike was abducted while returning to his parish after attending to an assignment.

Ordained on September 27, 2014, by the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, Fr. Azubuike has served faithfully in the Obollo community. The diocese, in an official statement issued by Chancellor and Secretary Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, called for intense prayers from both clergy and laity for the priest’s safe release.

The statement, titled “Notification of Kidnap and Call for Prayers,” urged, “We request your fervent prayers that he may return to us safe and sound, trusting in your goodwill and solidarity.”

David Ajaero, the elected councillor of Obollo Ward, confirmed the abduction, describing Fr. Azubuike as a beloved figure in the community and asking the public to join in prayer for his immediate and unconditional release.

Imo State Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, reported that a special investigation team has been assembled under the Commissioner of Police to ensure Fr. Azubuike’s safe rescue and to pursue the apprehension of those responsible. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
